Traveling with Maxim Gorkiy
by Bernd Lützeler & Kolja Kunt /Germany 2014 /super8 found footage / 10' 35''

As so often, also here it's rather about allusion than description. This also applies to the persons represented. Flat silhouettes of people. Their heads depicted in profile. Faces with no expression, formal gestures. In the background, a little bit of everyday life: The hard, square, stone architecture arises from ocher-colored, brownish, blackish mush of color or mud. A demonstration of the function of the central perspective. An idealized representation of a tropical paradise. Strangely, there's no absurdity in this.

Bernd Lützeler studied at University of the Arts Berlin, where he completed Maria Vedder's master class in 2003. Nowadays he lives and works as an artist and filmmaker in Berlin. In his works he often focuses on the aesthetics and perception of the moving image and sound, and their interrelation with technology and society. Several of his film- and video-projects have been produced in Mumbai, India, including his last film the Voice of God and the multimedia theatre performance K⁰.
He is an active member of the artist-run, analogue film-collective LaborBerlin. Currently he works on his new experimental film Camera Threat.

Kolja Kunt lives and works in Berlin. She has been realizing short films, media installations and photo events. Recently she has been working on her first feature length film, an essayistic documentary in Guinea-Bissau/West Africa

LUTHIER
by Kevin T. Allen / Usa 2010 / super8 / 5' 49''

Raul Orlando Perez lives in the mountains of Patagonia. He crafted his first instrument in 1962. An instrument is not simply defined by the age, treatment, and construction of its materials, but is an alchemy that continues to grow and adapt with use. In 2009, I brought him a door salvaged from my family home lost to fire. He transformed it into a beautiful handcrafted flamenco guitar.

Kevin T. Allen is a filmmaker and sound artist who has exhibited at numerous venues, including MoMA, Margaret Mead Film Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, Berlin Directors Lounge, Ethnographic Terminalia, and Deep Wireless Festival of Radio Art. Recent research has lead him to find culture not exclusively in human forms, but also inherent in physical landscapes and material objects. He teaches documentary practice at The New School in NYC and is funded through the Jerome Foundation..
