Stromboli left hand
By Riojim performance for 16mm projector. - 30 min. The projector and the film are manipulated live, exploding the projection frame out of a smoky montage for a fresh history of cinema. And in the dark beat of the shutter things burst in, ghostly, like islands that have not yet received their name. |
Riojim runs the Fondhurle Lab where he teaches DIY film processing, contact and optical printing and editing.
He is particularly attracted to abstract animation, the pleasure of physically modifying images on the film via twisted and other chemical treatments frowned on by professional labs. He pushes the possibilities of the emulsion to the edge. The material produced in the laboratory becomes a work of improvisation integrating all the parameters of projection. By means of prepared projectors, he applies severe treatment to the projector and plays with the film and the homemade optical sound on film to create a real visual music. Involved in experimental film for 20 years, Riojim have been a member of the 102, a venue in Grenoble dedicated to experimental arts, hosting most of the foremost improvisers of new music. It is natural that his art culture and sensibility turn him toward the practice of improvisation which he understand as a quick and profound reaction to events where each performance is constructed for a particular time and place. Citing Jim Denley, he also believe that exploring the moment of creation - when an idea, feeling or gesture is first expressed - is to take part in the most exciting adventure possible, not only for the artist but also for the audience ! As a ex-member of Atelier MTK he is deeply engaged in sharing film processing knowledges and tools, open to collaborate with artists who consider the lab as a field of experimentation and research. Also he’s regularly invited to organize workshops in schools, universities and with artists groups. These workshops can be as simple as "making films without camera", or it may be a collaboration with artists who want to start their own lab. The base of workshop is to explore and practice ideas around creative processing, projection space, projector manipulation, camera-less film making, optical sound...with 16mm film. |
Ordered Frame Chaos by Marek Pluciennik /w JF Care 35mm, Color, Live Processed sound, 30 min In his 35mm film performance Marek pays hommage to the dawn of cinema whilst stepping away from cinema's industrial consistent mechanical reproduction of film frames. In the meanwhile JF CARE creates a sound environment that starts from a larsen sent by Marek projector. Sound de-structure of analog and digital components, hyper expansions of infinitesimal sound signals. Exploring the 35mm projection with the dissonance of hand crank filming and projecting. What happens between the frames without industrial consistency? |
Marek Pluciennik is an independent filmmaker and cinema artist based in Helsinki. The main concern of his work is the materiality of the film medium. Aside from films, his work is site specific, ephemeral projection performances and installations. His films have been screened among others in Process Film Festival in Riga 2019, PatchLab 2016 in Krakow, Madatac07 Festival 2015 in Madrid, London Analogue Festival 2014, 2005 Images Film Festival in Toronto, 1998 International Short Film Festival in Tampere, . His performances has been shown in contemporary art galleries and festivals in Latvia, Finland, Poland, Sweden, Hungary, Italy and Canada.
He is one of the founding members of Catalysti Transcultural Artists in Finland, and board member of Filmverkstaden artist run Film Lab. |
Domestication Film Series by 70FPS aka Andrea Saggiomo live modified 16mm film projections, color and b/w, sounds produced live from the projection by means of DIY photosensitive electroacoustic circuits. This is meant to be a series of at least six 16mm shortfilms to be played live. The inner focus of the series is on the domestication process we all originated from as human beings. That’s about the beauties and the cruelties that domestication and selfdomestication process brings to our lives and world. Every single short film focuses on a different subject and uses its own experimental cinematic technique on any level: shooting, processing, editing, printing, projecting and producing sounds and noises. Other than by a different way to work on the film at different levels, any of the six films will be accompanied by a different approach in live sound production (drowing and designing optical or magnetic sound, building new diy handmade photosensitive and magnetic electroacoustic circuits, hacking 16mm eiki and bolex or microtecnica projectors). In this way each film will be the departing material for a radically different live film concert in which the projector and the film itself are used as instruments to produce sound by modifying the cinematic image. |
Andrea Saggiomo was born in Florence (Italy) in 1980. He’s living in Napoli since 1999. In 2007 he started experimenting as theater director and he founded his own theater group that produced two shows (“I canti di Maldoror” in 2008 and “I fiori d’Arancio” in 2009) both of which were awarded in italian theater contests (Nuove Sensibilità 2008 and Fabbrica Europa 2009). Both shows presented super8 film projections live on stage. In 2011 he founded with Gaelle Cavalieri a new impro- noise performance duo called ASTEPBACK as a way out from theater milieu going to underground noise experimental performance scene. In 2011 he also started the solo project 70FPS which consist of audio-visual noise performances using selfmade photosensitive sound devices alternatively applied to film projections or to video feedback systems . With this project he improvised and collaborated with musicians as Aspec(t), Andy Guhl, SEC_, Rico, Company Fuck and filmmakers and video artists as Seppo Renvall, Riojim, Botborg, MTK, Xavier Querel, Gaelle Rouard, COGNE ET FOUTRE, Abstral Compost. The first DVD by 70FPS, titled BUT YOU ARE was released on VIANDE records in 2012. An audio cassette by 70FPS cathodic set titled CAMPO CATODICO was released on archivio diàfonico in 2015. Recently he collaborated on a track with Rae and Billion o’clock released on LightItem BA7CH. He was one of the founding members of collective Ark-Film-Lab in Napoli and oraganized many expanded cinema and audio/video nights in 76A – Napoli, hosting many filmmakers, musicians and videomakers from abroad. Three years ago he founded PASSO_RIDOTTO, an individual artisanal cinelab selling processing and scanning cheap super8 films.
