FLAT-PRINT 16mm: making films without camera
25 + 26 novembre 2017 // MERANO (BZ)
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ABOUT THE WORKSHOP The base of workshop is to explore and practice ideas around creative processing, projection space, projector manipulation, camera-less film making, optical sound with 16mm film. I uses 16mm projector as a musical instrument, a luminous light source emitting both sound and image mixed together in live improvisation. Images are masked, deformed and fused; films scratched, defiled and coloured - offering a vast palette of material for improvisation. Participants will be introduce to the projector as a magic box for improvising with sound/noise and image/light. Participants will develop ways of playing and interacting with the 16mm film projector - practicing projection manipulations with loops and objects, and using contact microphones to amplify the sounds of the projector’s mechanics. To complete the workshop, participants will play solo, duo or big band to bring alive expanded projection and sound improvisations. PROGRAM - Introduction to the workshop - Differences between shooting emulsion and print emulsion - What is b&w developer, reversal process. - Set up of the lab for flat-print. - Practice of flat-print and discover the enormous potential of creativity allowed by this process. - How to load a 16mm projector and screening. What we will do : mostly copy-work, using flat print, contact printing, hand processing & creative projection. Riojim works at Atelier MTK in Grenoble - France, where he teaches DIY film processing. He is particularly attracted to abstract animation, the pleasure of physically modifying images on the film via twisted and other chemical treatments frowned on by professional labs. The material produced in the laboratory becomes a work of improvisation integrating all the parameters of projection. By means of prepared projectors, he applies severe treatment to the projector and plays with the film and the homemade optical sound on film to create a real visual music. Involved in experimental film for 20 years, Riojim have been a member of the 102, a venue dedicated to experimental arts, hosting most of the foremost improvisers of new music. It is natural that his art culture and sensibility turn him toward the practice of improvisation which he understand as a quick and profound reaction to events where each performance is constructed for a particular time and place. Citing Jim Denley, he also believe that exploring the moment of creation - when an idea, feeling or gesture is first expressed - is to take part in the most exciting adventure possible, not only for the artist but also for the audience ! As a member of Atelier MTK he is deeply engaged in sharing film processing knowledges and tools, open to collaborate with artists who consider the lab as a field of experimentation and research.
