Inspired by Pablo Neruda’s Book of Questions—a collection of lyrical, unanswerable poems that playfully interrogate nature, life, and the cosmos—the film weaves poetic inquiry with visual abstraction through the rarely used mordançage technique. Its veil-like formations evoke the fluid, fragile, ever-changing essence of rivers, suggesting they are living entities, much like us.

Heidi Piiroinen is a Helsinki-based visual artist and photographer working across experimental moving image, photography and installation. With a background in documentary storytelling and photojournalism, her practice has shifted toward more intimate, process-based works that explore emotional memory, invisibility, and suppressed states of being.
Piiroinen combines analogue techniques like 16mm film and mordançage with text, archival material, sound, and community collaboration. Her recent solo exhibition In Case of Loss / sitten haluaisin laulaa—which weaves together diary entries, collaborative writing, soundscapes, moving images, and performance into a cinematic, multi-room installation—premiered at the Rauma Art Museum (2024–2025) and travels internationally to Lisbon in late 2026. Her moving image work has been presented through residencies and festivals, including a residency at Light Cone Atelier 105 in Paris and the premiere of I am a River in the Tiger Short Competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (2026). Piiroinen is a recipient of the State Award for Public Information and the Patricia Seppälä Foundation Photojournalism Award. Her work has been supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike), the Kone Foundation, and the Alfred Kordelin Foundation, among others.
