Film Without a Camera
Direct Animation with a Soundtrack
workshop with Jan Rehwinkel

IT //

Film Without a Camera Direct Animation with a Soundtrac

ENG //
We treat the film stock like a canvas, applying and removing colors, and even creating the soundtrack in the process. Using various tools and materials, we’ll create images and sound in this workshop by manipulating the film stock with markers, ink, adhesive film, and sharp objects, including the optical audio track.
The results can be seen and heard immediately using a film projector.

To begin, we will explore the analogue film techniques required for this process and the basics of animation.
Over the course of the workshop, participants will learn not only the creative process but also how to operate a film projector and how to edit 16mm film. And, of course, we’ll take a look at the history of direct animation

Program //

Introduction to technical possibilities: - What defines the medium of film?

- Structure, synchronization of image and sound

- Materiality (base material, emulsion, perforation, optical sound …)

- Film projector characteristics

- Tools and materials for creating image and sound

- Fundamentals of animation

First hands-on experiment: painting and scratching on 16mm film (loops)

Viewing and analysing the first samples - Questions about technical possibilities, deepening film knowledge

- How does optical sound work

- Watching examples by filmmakers

Continuing to work on films: painting and scratching on 16mm film (loops)

Each participant will be provided with sufficient transparent and black film stock to create loops.

Found footage, paints, and tools for editing the films will also be available.

The program closes with hands-on studio time, giving participants space to deepen their preferred technique. We start by reviewing previous results, watching further film examples, and addressing any questions that have come up — adapting to the group's knowledge and interests.
There's ample time to review works-in-progress and experience the effect of endless loops: repetition and the perception of time. Using two or more projectors, we combine the animations and soundtracks created during the workshop into a multi-projection setup to experiment with.
