ANALOGICA HOSTS // is a series of live streams dedicated to the filmmakers we’ve met in the first ten years of activity.
A journey through the independent scene of experimental and alchemic cinema, which often arises in small autonomous labs, collectives of filmmakers, spaces of analog resistance. The live streaming series is accessible from Analogica's website. Each stream lasts about 60 '. |
Richard Tuohy is one of the most active experimental film artists currently working on celluloid in Australia.
He runs Nanolab in Australia – the specialist small gauge film processing laboratory. He actively encourages other artists to work with cine film through his Artist Film Workshop initiative (see artistfilmworkshop.org). He is also a founding director of the Australian International Experimental Film Festival. Dianna Barrie is an experimental filmmaker. She found her way into filmmaking as a middle ground between the pursuit of abstract music and philosophy. Together with Richard Tuohy she established Nanolab, which is a hand-processing lab for super-8 black-and-white and colour reversal film. This exploration has spread beyond individual work to the establishment of the Artist Film Workshop. |
Last Train / 2016 / 16mm / 12'
Found in the (now possibly lost) film archive at Lab Laba Laba, footage from a trailer for the 1981 Indonesian propaganda film 'Kereta Api Terakhir' (The Last Train) melts into a soup of chemigrammed perforations. A film about the silence that follows the unspeakable; about blurred visions, untold histories and inaccessible archives. Crossing / 2016,16mm, 10' Across the sea. Across the street. Cross processed super 8 footage of fraught neighbours Korea and Japan in grain focussed enlargement. Ginza Strip / 2014, 16mm, 9' The Ginza of fable and memory. This is the first film I have finished using the 'chromaflex' technique that we developed. This is a very much hands on colour developing procedure that allows selected areas of the film to be colour positive, colour negative, or black and white. Valpi / 2019 / 16mm/ 9' A city of brick, tin and board, rent by internal tectonics and sliding into the sea. China not China / 2018 / 16mm / 14' Hong Kong marked 20 years since its hand over; half way through the planned 40 year 'one country, two systems' transition. Taiwan, once imperial China, once Formosa, now ROC on the edge of the PRC. Multiple exposures of street scenes distort space and place creating a fluid sense of impermanence and transition, of two states somewhere between China and not China.
