Fathers' Land by Francesco Di Gioia
found footage / 2021 / Italy / 11’ 24’’ 1910s. Poems with alternate rhymes narrate a journey by sea and by rail. These are the verses of Fadil Hasin Ash-Shalmani who witness a historical fact often forgotten: the deportation of numerous civilians during the first years of the Italian occupation in Libya. The short film follows the poet's experiences and memories using only archive footage, thus subverting the original propaganda function of the images. Francesco Di Gioia (Gorizia, 1993) achieved a BA (Hons) at the Politecnico of Milan in Communication Design, after which he began a course at the Civica Scuola Luchino Visconti in Documentary Cinema. He then studied Video Editing at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. In 2020 he approached found-footage cinema as director by making the short film “Fathers’ Land” (2021). He currently works as an archive researcher for several productions. |

16mm / 2023 / Canada / 6’ 20’’ In March, the streets of Mexico City are covered in purple Jacaranda flowers. Obrera— “Worker” in Spanish—is a working class neighbourhood. I follow the trail of purple flowers on the ground, and discover a large bronze monument behind the fence of an apartment building courtyard: a seamstress, working on a sewing machine. At home, I look up the address: Manuel José Othón, corner of San Antonio Abad. I find a photo of the monument and these words: "Topeka, large garment factory, employed hundreds of women." And then: "Bronze statue at site of collapsed factory." Yuula Benivolski is an artist and filmmaker in Toronto. Through auto-fiction and personal archive she explores the territories between memory and official history. Most recently, her work has been shown at Microscope Gallery in NYC, Istanbul International Experimental Film Festival, and Trinity Square Video media arts centre in Toronto. |
Land Changes Hands, but the Bees
Remain in the Hive by Roger Horn super8, found footage / 2022 / South Africa / 10’ 54’’ "Land Changes Hands, but the Bees Remain in the Hive" is a short, found footage film which delves into the controversial Fast Track Land Reform Programme (FTLRP) initiated by former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe in 2000. The program aimed to redistribute white-owned farmland to Zimbabweans across cultural boundaries, and was often accompanied by violence. Two decades later, a young white Zimbabwean woman reflects on her childhood experiences during the primary years of the land invasions and the lasting effects on her family, as well as the persistent racism within the white farming community. Roger Horn is a filmmaker, anthropologist, and Associate Professor of Practice at Northern Arizona University in the Creative Media & Film Department. He obtained his PhD at the University of Cape Town in Cultural Anthropology and holds an MA in Visual & Media Anthropology. |
A field guide to coastal fortifications
by Tijana Petrovic 16mm / 2023 / Usa / 24’ 16’’ This essay film explores the technological evolution of military bunkers built within the San Francisco Bay’s eroding coast. The film observes a dynamic geological relationship between the literal structures of colonial power, and the land itself. Against the backdrop of a changing landscape and its mythology, the film looks at the evolution of military technologies of seeing. Tijana Petrović is a filmmaker, cinematographer and educator born and raised in ex-Yugoslavia (now Serbia). Tijana’s work has screened at film festivals and exhibition venues internationally including IFF Rotterdam, True/False, Images, Ann Arbor and Dok Leipzig among others. She is based in the San Francisco Bay Area where she works as a freelance cinematographer and lecturer at Stanford University. |
