Searching for Fireflies

In 1975, only a few months before his death, Pier Paolo Pasolini wrote a now famous article in which he stages the allegorical disappearance of fireflies in the Italian countryside, due to the effects industrial pollution. Echoing both his sense of loss and his deep commitment to the cinematic image, this diptych offers a snapshot of the postindustrial reality of Southern Italian landscapes in the present. It evokes, side by side, the aged bark of an olive tree and the antiquated structure of a steel plant, through the flickering and incandescent medium of 16mm film
